On Saturday it was determined that Caitlin has regained her swallowing reflex enough to eat food. It has taken a lot of practice with water on a spoon to get Caitlin to open her mouth wide enough to get the water in and subsequently swallow it in a timely fashion. Now the mission is to increase her nutrient intake orally with the goal of getting the feeding tube out of her nose. Lo and behold this means eating hospital food. If anyone remembers when Caitlin was in rehab the first time this was a never ending battle...she really doesn't like hospital food. We were bringing in food on a daily basis just so she would eat. The only thing she was willing to order off the hospital menu was macaroni and cheese. Even at that she really didn't eat very much of it. For today we celebrated that she ate 10 tiny bites. The nurses said that was great for her first day of eating. We tried a Wendy's frosty too...about 6 tiny bites! So we are on that slow and steady road in a new direction as of today!
I have been reading to Caitlin quite a bit to keep her relaxed and calm. She closes her eyes to listen but if I stop the eyes pop open and she gives me the authoritative point to continue. Of course I follow her directions just fine and appreciate the calm bonding time for me as she gets her much needed rest for recovery.

Yay Caitlin<333
Mac and Cheese, and Wendy's frosties are soooo much better than that icky tube! So, keep up the good work and get that tube out as fast as you can =) I am so proud of you Caitlin, you really have no idea. When I hear, or read about the progress you are making...it honestly just makes my day. Also, just know that there is not a day that goes by where I don't think about you, and wish the best. I love you dearly, and keep up the wonderful work<333
Hi Girls!
Keep up the good work. I check in every day on Cailtin's recovery- it is nice to hear how much progress she is making.
Hooray!

Caitlin,
I check on you evry day to make sure you are being the roughest toughest I know you can be. You are making such great progress. Pretty soon you will be back at Chuck's eating your specail pizza concoction. Hugs to both you and mom!!! Josh's Mom Kathy
Wow, mac and cheese and a frosty! You are looking good. Keep it up. It is nice to see you smiling. Kathy-eat, eat, eat!
Love,
Nurit
Yes Macaroni! I'm so excited that you get to eat some real food, it's about time, right? Good job!
I've been thinking about a nickname for that handsome doctor, and was thinking we could put it up for suggestions.
Does anyone have a clever (code name) nickname? We all know and love McDreamy and McSteamy, but we need a name for our real life dream doctor. He sure is an O'Cutie!
Mac and Cheese, next it will be margaritas and nachos! My turn to buy the first round when the time comes! Keep working hard! Love, Hammond
Caitlin~
It was so good to see your now smiling face = ) You look great and I'm so glad I got to spend some time with you yesterday. We had a good time reading and hope your leg stretching (mostly massage) session helped!
You are amazing...keep up the fight!
LOVE YOU <3
Thinking of you Caitlin! If you need a good book to be read to, try "Three cups of Tea." Its about a guy who is a nurse but moreso a philanthropist who builds a school for the Nepaleese (i think) people.
