As so many of you know Caitlin had one stroke in her sleep the night of October 26th. This stroke was in the left side of her brain impacting her motor functions of her right side and then also her speech. Four days after her stroke she was in acute rehabilitation and making gains on a daily basis. On November 8th Caitlin had a seizure which put her back in intensive care where she remains today. It was determined that not only did she have a seizure but she also had another stroke which was on the right side of her brain. Essentially, Caitlin had no ability to move either side of her body and no ability to communicate. She struggled with her breathing after asperating some fluid into her lungs. There still is no known cause for either stroke after just about every test and blood test the doctors could think of as they search for an answer to this puzzling situation. An EEG was administered and all her brain wave function was stable and fine.
On Friday, November 14th, we turned the corner. Caitlin was finally beginning to wake up. Each day we have seen babysteps. Friday Caitlin was beginning to turn her head to see people on either side of her. She was responding well to familiar voices. She also was able to squeeze and release with her left hand. On Saturday I was able to feed her ice chips under the careful supervision of the speech therapist. Her swallowing reflex was beginning to emerge. I also read from a poster her co-workers at Sierra Eye Associates had made for her. Each person she works with signed the poster with loving thoughts. She cried as I read the wonderful notes to her. Of course, I had to cry with her. Caitlin is loved by so many people. I know she was tearful because she would rather be at work doing all the tasks that people are missing her doing. Today she was able to point with a finger on the left hand when asked to do so. The beginnings of communication!!! Each day there is just one more sign that she is making babysteps toward recovery. What we thought were babysteps after the first stroke are now being looked at as huge, giant steps.
Right now we all want to spend time with Caitlin. But, the best method in stroke recovery is therapy and sleep with limited stimulation around the stroke victim. This is difficult for me in that I want her to know how loved and supported she is by so many, many people. I relay messages that I receive and read cards to her that she has gotten in the mail. Once she gets back up to the rehab unit in the hospital we will be able to hang these up in her room and surround her with all the loving thoughts people have sent. Please continue to send those thoughts her way until she is able to have visitors. Your positive thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. We want to see that beautiful smile again!

Hey Kathy, this looks great! I think it will be just what others need to find updates!
Caitlin you are loved by so many. Our thoughts, love and prayers are with you every minute of every day.Kathy you are amazing. Your strength and continuous conversations with Caitlin are what give her the stregth she needs on her long road to recovery. Your voice is what empowers and soothes her to take those babysteps that are cherished every day. Christine and Tim your endless hours just sitting by Caitlin's side are also amazing and it is so nice to know that you have been there to help keep Caitlin's environment calm and well loved. Many of us would love to be there more but we know that it is in Caitlin's best interest that we keep her in our prayers and thoughts as opposed to adding more stress to her every day rehabilitation. We look forward to the day that Caitlin is again moved to the rehab unit and the hard physical work begins again on her path to rehabilitation. This time we are going to decorate her room to include everything that Caitlin loves ie posters , pictures of friends and family, cards etc. Mallory thanks for adding all the beautiful photos.
Please pass along our hugs and prayers to Caitlin from the training room at U of P: Lori, Kyle & Joel
Caitlin,
Carl and I and our chruch in VA will cont prayers for a full and speedy recovery. I know that not only being a strong Fuetsch woman you have your mother's east coast "don't mess with me attitude"(I'm also from the east coast) and that's a great combo to have when dealing with this new challenge. Lots of love and finger pointing!
Dear Kathy and Caitlin:
I am shocked by this awful news and have added you to my prayer list at church and have asked all my friends to do the same. I hope the knowledge that you are being prayed for will give you the extra strength you need to complete the journey to wellness. Prayers are being said for you from Brazil to Massachusetts and Florida to California and beyond to Hawaii! You are loved more than you know and we are all sending positive energy and loving thoughts to you daily from here on out! I pray for good news at your blog daily. With much love and gentle hugs, Cousin Monica & Mike
This is a great way to communicate with everyone...my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Much love, always
Megan
Our dear, dear Caitlin, I was so lucky today becuse I got to stop in and visit for a few minutes while bringing your mom lunch, you look so beautiful.I feel so lucky that I got to spend a few moments with you, for I know it is in your best intrest to let you rest and to stay away, its so hard for all of us to do because you are loved by so many, your room would look like a revolving door with your fans coming in and going out. We stay away because it is best for you and your recovery, but know you are loved.Your mom told me that Mal hsd set this site up and I wanted to write to you.Ok so it took me hours to figure out how to do this, you know how bad I am with computers :) but for my girls it seems anything is possible.
Caitlin you fight hard, we all want you home. We miss and love you and can't wait until you are moved to a room where we can visit.Work hard at your recovery and know you are LOVED!!!!!
